Fun outing 06/29/2009

We gave a presentation at a family reunion today. The animals had a blast showing how entertaining it can be to learn at a family reunion!  Sherman, the hedgehog, had his first show. He was great, he stayed uncurled and kept checking out all the people. As always, Zoe the parrot tried to steal the show by showing off her beautiful voice and range of behaviors.

Thank you Lunte Family Reunion for giving us such a fun night.

The show went very well today. Coconut, the umbrella cockatoo, did great! He loved the kids and the kids loved him. Peewee, the parrotlet, had his first debut, he was also very fun for the kids. Thank you Natural History Center, it was a fun time for everyone.

Molly, Charlie, and I have been hanging out in the yard watching a mother moose and her calf on and off all day. They came down to muck around in the swamp down in the meadow. Earlier we saw two golden eagles circling in the sky. It's been a nice day.

Norma Jean, the pigeon, has mastered his flight training. In just several days he was able to relearn his flight pattern. He is a wonderful bird that never ceases to amaze.

Medical update 06/19/2009

Black Dalia is on a new antibiotic. She's a little more active and showed a little interest in eating today. The vet did a necropsy on Velvet and found she had a bacterial infection in her intestines that resulted in her death. She showed no signs until it was too late. Sometimes I wish animals could just talk to us and tell us when they didn't feel too well.

Training 06/17/2009

I spent this morning training some of the animals. Coconut, the umbrella cockatoo, is learning how to go into a crate. He's not very interested in the idea, he'd rather be snuggling. Norma Jean, the pigeon, is re-learning how to fly in formation. He's a quick learner and should have this mastered in a few days.

We had a great presentation today and for a few animals it was their first. Jumbuck, the bearded dragon, was cool as a cucumber and acted like a pro. Yucca, the red-footed tortoise, and Carlos, the Sinaloan milksnake, also did well for their first show. Everyone had a great time and the kids went home with fun facts to tell their parents and friends.

Dusty and Ash 06/14/2009

The 2 male chinchillas that arrived yesterday have received their names. Dusty and Ash. Dusty is more outgoing and curious. He comes right up to see what's going on and waits to see if he gets a treat. Ash is more reserved and stays back while observing the world. Both Dusty and Ash like to he held and take treats from the hand. They will make excellent ambassadors for their species.
