For the last few days we have had a hawk hanging around really close to the animal compound. It looks like a juvenile and we are thinking he might be attracted to the outdoor pigeon aviary.
This situation is not very dangerous for the pigeons since the hawk can't get them but it is seriously dangerous for the hawk. In some situations juvenile hawks will continue to hang out looking at the pigeons and not hunting anything else. He can eventually starve himself thinking at any moment he will get a nice meal. If you have birds outdoors please be aware of juvenile hawks caught in the situation. Either bring the birds inside or cover them or scare away the hawk every time he comes around. We have covered the pigeons and hope that this is enough. He has not come very close today so we're hoping he starts to move on. The other birds have not been allowed in their outdoor enclosures either. Coconut refuses to come outside because he has seen the hawk flying overhead and gets very scared. We'll be watching closely for signs of the hawk for the next week or so.
